When I first started recording, I remember the adrenaline rush cascading into a
wave of near panic the closer we got to "tape is rolling". I used to think,"Once this is down, whatever I play is there forever (or at least until the tape breaks). After a take or two, I began to be reminded how much fun it is to simply be creating music. Once I basked in the fun, I thought less about "perfection". I've learned to seek the passion over the perfection; after all- only one is truly attainable anyway. :-)

A and A, thanks for the kind words. Glad we were helpful to you. It's always mixed, and much of the mixture of my experience was good, despite the focus of the blog post. Cheers!

Wow. A great friend from Atlanta forwarded me this blog because he and I and a whole bunch of musicians from Tallahassee, Fla were blown away by the Producers and esp Kyle and Van when they dropped in to play a few gigs. I don't think it's too hyperbolic to say that the Producers, at that moment in time, infuenced us much like the Beatles influenced the Mersey Beat in Liverpool. Probably sounds silly now, but there was a time when I Love Lucy was in rotation on the local radio to a point where we would hear it 3x an hour and we still didn't get sick of it. What really made the Producers special was the amazing live show. After getting on MTV we figured u guys had made it and were thrilled for you and then suddenly u guys seemed to disappear. We were heartbroken. A year later Angie and I bought a motorcycle from you in North Hollwood. The music biz is a cruel mistress, but at least u left a positive mark and that's all any of us can ask of life. Without the Producers many riffs we've stolen and songs we wrote would not have been written. Hopefully you can retroactively give me permission to use the intro riff from What She Does To Me one of the pop songs ever written!!
All the best Kyle. You've made a lot of people happy w your amazing voice and musicianship.

Nigel, true dat, man. When the scales, modes and muscle memories are so deep they respond without conscious work during the performance, you can, as Parker says, fuggedabout and "just blow".

Kyle - I think that you are absolutely "spot on" with this entry. Every excellent/successful musician that I have ever known had a really strong, focused work ethic. They practiced all the time, regardless of what was going on around them. Another thing that I've noticed (and try to emulate) is that they are always working on the fundamentals. You may be a great free-throw shooter, but if you can't dribble, pass, and block a shot...you ain't playing basketball! Scales and music theory can be really boring...but they make you come out looking like a champ every time!

so, one thing with a take for the basic track, another thing for a fill or dub or solo or a lead vocal, when the pressure's on a bit.

when i hear van play solos on your (*ahem*, forgive the phrase) old producers records, it is so obvious that it is a guy who knows what he's doing, is very good at what he's doing, and can't wait for the red light to come on.

in that regard, it is precisely to your point. you have to WANT the red light to come on.

nice piece, nice thought.

After a long long long (25 year) absence, I finally googled the Producers to reconnect with this band that was so much a part of my life in the 80's in Missouri ! Glad I found so much information and glad I found your Blog Kyle ! You can't imagine the impact you and Wayne Famous had on a small but cool group of friends, none of which have even spoken to one another for over 30 years. But your music brings back memories that cannot be erased. I am glad to see that you are doing well and still hard at work. Please accept a big THANK YOU for being a small, but vital part of my life !
